The Gospel of John #23

By Robert Guenther

We are continuing our review of the Gospel of John chapter five and the next point that is being made is the fact that our Lord has given us the Word of God to be a greater witness than John the Baptist.

Vs. Joh 5:38 “And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.” We can have the Word of God abiding in us if we will believe the Word. Believing is the only requirement on our part to be saved.

Vs. Joh 5:39 “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” It is the Lord’s desire that all men be saved as it is written in I Tim. 2:4 “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” This fact seems almost impossible to believe, but God has made it very simple for mankind to come to Him by believing the Word of God.

Vs. Joh 5:40 “And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.” There is only one way and it requires that we believe the record of God’s Son Christ Jesus. Joh 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Joh 5:41 I receive not honour from men.” This word honour has the idea of glory which mankind cannot add to God. When we consider how far God is above us in righteousness and truth it is easy to see why these men could not add to His glory.

Vs. Joh 5:42 “But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.” Because God can know man’s thoughts He can determine what man believes. Heb 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Vs. Joh 5:43 “I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.” In 2 Th 2: 3, 4 we are informed that is the son of perdition will come to deceive them “…that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Because of unbelief God will allow them to believe the lie as it is written in 2 Th 2:11 “And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

Vs Jon 5:44 “How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?” By comparing ourselves with one another we deceive ourselves.
